Hanafi Principles of Testing Hadith

This course introduces students to the classical Hanafi approach to evaluating hadith and understanding how narrations are weighed within the broader framework of Islamic law. Using Shaykh Atabek Shukurov’s text, students will explore the principles early Hanafi jurists employed when assessing reports and reconciling them with the Qur’an, established legal principles, and the wider teachings of the religion.

Understanding Hadith Through the Hanafi Legal Tradition

Not every question about a hadith can be answered by examining its chain of transmission alone. This course introduces students to the methodological principles used within the Hanafi tradition to evaluate narrations, particularly when a report appears to conflict with established texts, legal principles, or other authoritative evidence.

Through the study of Hanafi Principles of Testing Hadith, students will examine how early Hanafi scholars approached questions of authenticity, interpretation, conflicting evidence, and the use of individual reports in deriving law. The course gives students a deeper appreciation of the relationship between hadith scholarship and fiqh, while providing a structured framework for approaching difficult or seemingly contradictory narrations.

The text is authored by Shaykh Atabek Shukurov An-Nasafi, with English translation and commentary by Sulaiman Ahmed Al-Hanafi.
